Synoptic Typer Tools

Synoptic Typer Tools (STT) is a synoptic map classification application written in Interactive Data Language (IDL). STT is an update to the program known as Synoptic Typer.  The program has been extensively updated and edited by Danny Blair and Ryan Smith (University of Winnipeg, Department of Geography) and by Robert Dahni (Australian Bureau of Meteorology).  STT uses Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and K-means Cluster Analysis to classify variables from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis and ERA-Interim datasets, including mean sea level pressure (SLP) and geopotential height.

STT version 4.0 is now available for download (take a virtual tour to find out what’s new). Interested researchers can download the program file from the downloads page. The NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 data can be downloaded from the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory. STT requires IDL version 6.4 or newer. A free version of the IDL Virtual Machine (version 8.2) can be downloaded from the EXELIS website.  Please contact us with any questions or comments.
